Pursuing Success or Significance VLOG

The “Christian Artist” treads a very difficult path. All should be aware of the tension between being a follower of Jesus and the self-promotion that is necessary to succeed as an artist. The disciple of Christ must recognize that Jesus demands that we “die” to our desire for “self-promotion” (Romans 12:1, Matthew 16:24, Luke 14:26-33Galatians 2:20). Ultimately, our work as artists should promote Jesus and not ourselves. All of us should be aware that we can easily find ourselves chasing after the wrong goals and that our motives are not as pure as we might like to think.

How then do we get back on track or stay on the right path? Is outward success a sign or confirmation that we are doing what God wants us to do?

I discussed these questions in a recent interview with legendary Nashville artist manager Mike Smith.

“We so easily confuse success with significance.”

“There is nothing wrong with working hard, being well organized and achieving success in a business sense – which is the way we tend to talk about success. It’s not money that’s the root of all evil, it’s the LOVE OF money that’s the root of all evil.”

“We should be striving to be significant – not successful – within the fabric of the Kingdom of God.”
